Punk 2007... Issue 7 December - Xmas Special

Captain's Log...

Well fuck me what a year...the older you are the faster it goes and this one's gone by like a rocket.

Contrary to public fears we weren't deluged with a million shoddy Punk books, documentaries and whatever; in fact standards were pretty high. The Sex Pistols played again and feelings were mixed as to whether they were good or not, Steve ignorant played a full set of Crass stuff and was a real surprise of the year with the power and dignity intact and Henry Rollins gave perhaps the most moving set singing with the Ruts and a terminally ill Foxy. Cds came and cds went but there have been some corkers this year not least 999 who came up trumps. Honourable mentions to Cocksparrer and Subway Sect too.

And while so many of us live and breathe rock'n'roll some of us breathe no more...so a sad farewell among others to Foxy of the Ruts, Dave Bateman of Vice Squad and Raven of Killing Joke and Neon Hearts.

And of course Punk77 is the Talkpunkers who continue to debate, read, listen and see gigs including I Am The Fly, Pet Lamb, Blitzkrieg Bob, Joey, Nige, El Diablo, Dabble, DM999, Kenny, ML, China Doll, Person Unknown, MSQKXYZ and all the rest of you. The true vox pop.

Lastly big thanks to Ian Part Time & Mad Daddy  for continued contributions and Ms Dayglo for moderating and hardly mentioning the Wolfmen, wolfmen, wolfmen :)

Happy Christmas chummies. Same again next year!

And so to the Update and while other sites serve the equivalent of cold turkey here's a full on Punky feast...

1977 - Year Review

In true Punk77 style we celebrate the 30 anniversary of that punkiest of years 1977 when the two sevens clashed. And what better way than virtually at the end of 2007! Relive the highs and lows courtesy of Record Mirror and a host of images pilfered from the internet. Jumpers for goalposts? Oxford bags and wedges? Spikey hair and cussing we say and a dollop of attitude mr! Relive it here

Roxy Club again!!

30 years ago in December 1977, Roxy Club owner and kindly father figure to young bands, Kevin St John was planning a top notch 48 hour Christmas Party AND a second live album too boot that would feature among others the Crabs, UK Subs, Bears, Open Sore & Blitz.

30 years later here's me recounting his dastardly deeds and hey getting another plug in for the Roxy Club Punk history book! And why the fuck not eh?...there's still time to buy that parent, relative or pet a little something for their stocking or to welcome in 2008. Details below...

In March 1977 the Roxy Club got a bit of a coup when they hosted an American week featuring the Heartbreakers, Wayne County and Cherry Vanilla. The Heartbreakers had already played the Roxy and had shown the nascent British punkers a professionalism, tightness and songmanship and a pedigree traced to the legendary new York Dolls. Wayne County and Cherry Vanilla now offered a more exotic display from the legendary new York scene of Max's and a more theatrical and sexual show. They didn't disappoint! Live those nights with recollections from Ms County, Cherry Vanilla and Zecca Esquibel

Jayne County

Here you go right before your naked steaming eyes we give you an unadulterated lesson from the good book of the superstar that was Wayne and is Jayne.

What a life and times this girl has lived through and what an extraordinary personality. Funny and abrasive but never boring and hugely entertaining.

Make what you will of her comments on Bowie, Punk, Sex, music and all points in between!

Cherry Vanilla

Zecca Esquibel

Whether you like the music or not Cherry Vanilla was a sassy world wise singer who landed up on our fair punky shores offering a highly sexual show and a dose of punky attitude. In this interview she lifts the lid of the Police, sex and Punk rock in the UK. Click here

As if that wasn't enough Zecca Esquibel the keyboardist gives his take on events featuring the Roxy Club, violence and being gay in those far off punky times. Click here
