The Big One....  BILSTON UNITED

Mad Daddy wrote the following cryptic email to me regarding Bilston United.

"Bit of a "fun" interview this time round Paul, especially for us oldies that remember the pre punk 70's! Its a bit of fun which I think works quite well. Take Care, Mad daddy.

It is indeed and great music. No pictures of this secretive band but here's their influences.

"Punk, glam, and of course "Softly Softly", the crime drama series. Spin off from Z Cars, following the cases of detectives Barlow and Watt. For the first 69 episodes (in b&w) the show was known as Softly Softly, the title then changed in 1969 to Softly Softly - Task Force (for a further 131 episodes in colour) and Barlow left to take up his own series Barlow at Large. Yeah!! and.... umm, girls, beer, drugs, the usual etc..... "

WHITE HILLS

There are countless bands out there trying......and I stress trying......to replicate that classic sound of the early acid/kraut sound of the early seventies and until now I've treated virtually all of them with total disdain. I say until now because New York's White Hills have really made me sit up and take notice of this new generation of acid heads, they are quite simply incredible! Glitter Glamour Atrocity is without doubt the best song Hawkwind never wrote.....no hold on I'll put that another way......if the Space Ritual line up of Hawkwind were forming today, post acid house, this is what they would come up with, a genuine classic of its genre whether recorded in 1971 or 2007.They're over on one of their occasional jaunts to the UK in September with dates planned in London and Brighton, like me you should really try to get along to see them because I have a feeling they could be a bit of a special live experience!

SANTA DOG

You want perfect summer pop? I can give you that! You want a beautiful frontwoman whose looks fall just the right side of girl next door? Well bugger me, I can give you that too! Ladies and gents, I bring you Bristol's very own Santa Dog.

In truth in does not matter one jot what Rowena Dugdale looks like because if she can write and perform songs as good as these then she could resemble the back end of a number 364 bus and still be destined for stardom. Their sound? Well I suppose the best description would be a slick modern take on eighties jangle pop, lets say in a similar vein to the more structured bands on the Sarah Records roster.

Their debut single Big Bang has just been released in a limited run of 500 copies and their first album Kittyhawk is also available, albeit only on Japanese import at present.

TAMPOFFS

Tampoffs are the psychotic Saints! At least that's the best description I can give of this Boston four piece, they really do sound like the antipodean punk icons put through a U.S. hardcore mincer, there's even a little of Buzzcocks pop sensibility hiding away in those chord progressions!

Their sound takes me back to the very early days of hardcore when American bands were hugely influenced by the British first wave, the days when melody was still important, prior to the metal element of the genre taking hold.
I'm hoping to get over to New York later this year and with a little luck i may be able to catch them play with regular gig mates the excellent D.C. Snipers. If i do, then a full review will follow. Sadly they have precious little recorded material available, but you could always try and get hold of their split single with the aforementioned Snipers on Daggerman Records.

THEDO

Its a timeless scene. A Paris street cafe, you're seated alone at a secluded table. There's some movement on the tiny corner stage, the old bentwood chair creaks beneath you as you strain for a better view. You take a deep breath, inhaling from the haze of cigarette smoke....mmm Gitanes I think...which clears to reveal a Gallic vision, the epitome of feminine cool. She starts to sing and you're entranced. The scene, the look and the voice meld together to create an almost dream like state, and you drift away....away....away, until someone nudges you on the shoulder....OI MAD DADDY, THERES A REALLY FIT BIRD IN THIS BAND, ARE YOU COMING UP THE FRONT FOR A BETTER LOOK? My dream was shattered,b ut this imaginary drinking partner is right you know, Olivia B Merilahti is a "fit bird" a very fit bird!

Those of you who visit the TalkPunk forum may recall me mentioning The Do once before but they deserve reassessment now that their MySpace page has been revamped and a new song has been added. Now and again you hear something new that you just know 100% would break in a big, big way if it were given the right backing, and that's exactly how i feel about Ms Merilahti and her fellow composer and bandmate Dan Levy. The last time i heard anything quite as bewitching as this it was a little known Canadian combo called Arcade Fire and I guess their audience would probably be what The Do would be likely to appeal to.

Levy and Merilahti have been writing soundtracks for films and theatre for some years now and their compositions betray their origins completely, there is most certainly a sweeping cinematic air to all of their work, add THAT voice and you have The Do. Put simply, I n this case genius is not to strong a word and if i were either a British or American A&R man I would be battering down their door begging them to allow me to get them on a bigger stage than in that Paris street cafe.
All that is currently available is a four track CD soundtrack for the contemporary ballet "Scene d'Amour" by Juha-Pekka Marsalo. It features the long version of the haunting "The Bridge Is Broken" and three instrumental tracks. Their debut album "A Mouthful" is due out next January on Get Down Records. That is if they're not snapped up by a major before then!
