"They (The Slits) were loud brash bold and unrepentant.. they never compromised their image or stance...they must have inspired loads of women to pick up a guitar and form a band....they were pure punk driven by female power...they shocked a lot of people, both on and of stage. They were dangerous, and their very presence threatened those that considered rock to be a male-only pursuit." Mark Perry 'And God Created Punk'

"..not so much music as aural posturing designed to elevate them above the posing punkette ordinaire....Any other band who couldn't carry a tune and couldn't get a recording contract would be tossing and turning all night. But The Slits sleep as snug as smug bugs in a rug. Because co-incidentally their whole dalliance with show business has been courtesy of Arianas's mother." Burchill/Parsons 'Boy Looked At Johnny'

Were The Slits the trail blazers for women in punk ? "...not the picturesque topics and targets of songs"  (Burchill / Parsons - 'The Boy Looked At Johnny'), but women with something to say and the platform to say it very loud ?  Were they the proof that women could be threatening to the established order and succeed in music and do everything equally as well as their male counterparts ?  Were they influential ? Or were they just simply crap given their chance by luck of who they knew; just a novelty act of girls given the platform because they were girls ?

Its up to you take your choice. Punk77 provides evidence for both sides !
