Rudi - An Email Starts It Off

Home >> Punk Bands >> Rudi >> Rudi - Email

The reason why I sometimes overreact with emails is because people have no idea what sort of idiots and with what sort of shite they email me.  Unfortunately Brian's email came straight after some abuse from someone in Northern Ireland who thought he was big and clever and anonymous which I hate to tell you emailers you are not. My patience was a bit stretched hence I'm a little touchy..... !!!!

Hi..pretty neat site..but a few glaring errors..the roots of punk were rock'n'roll of the 50s...everything else came from that..the look, the attitude (only punk was far tamer..)the proliferation of small labels...and the same damn three chords!
later not enough New York dolls/Johnny Thunders (ALL the first UK bands worshipped the heartbreakers..)..also why no N.Ireland punk. RUDI were the first punk band here and by far the biggest, best and most influential in the early days...and are still remembered as the  best band ever here by miles..the Outcasts first 45 was on IT records not Good vibes (IT was releasing stuff long before good Vibes)...and SLF were always locally reviled ex hippies who only became punks as a career move in very very late 77...(still playing at the height of punk as Highway star with hair down their backs doing deep Purple songs..the dumb English fell for their crappy manufactured wartime chic though!..) aw well..still a damn good site...

Glaring errors ??? I seem to recall that I said the roots of punk was in the 50's rock'n'roll or didn't you read that bit   ??? As to the same three chords. .....well three chords maybe  but punk wasn't exactly constructed around the blues scale was it ..country is built around three chords but we can hardly link them all can we ???  New York Dolls etc...as you will have no doubt noticed ( having read the rock'n'roll bit) I got as far as the MC5 with the History of Punk which means that there is more to come.

At to NI punk ...I don't really like much of it and until someone else gets off their arse and writes something whats there will probably remain ( and wrong) . And as to SLF we dumb English were always suckers for good tunes ....its in our nature.

Some glaring errors in your email but still you made at least one good point

Hi..ulp! didn't mean to rattle your cage..but SLF and good tunes? (they stole Alternative Ulster off No Woman No Cry, Suspect Device off a Montrose song..space station Number 9? and 78RPM off Big Time by RUDI...that's only some of the ones Henry owned up to!..)..look forward to the Dolls stuff..by the way it's a VERY good site..!

Hi..I oughta come clean I suppose..anyways I (Brian Young)was in RUDI who were the first (and best... honest!)punk band here ..a pal of mine pointed me in the direction of your site..which is damn fuckin' good by the way (loved the Raped bit as they were very close mates of ours..their last gigs as the Raped were here in Belfast with us before they became the C toys...Paddy and Sean almost ended up in jail/dead..)and I love all the minutiae of the old stuff..I always gotta get a poke at SLF as it's fun (and winding Jake up is always recommended..) also as some prat once remarked something like 'history belongs to the winners' which means that all the bands here get written out of things in favour of those who had more mainstream success...the fact is that SLF were really looked on a a complete joke over here until they went off to England and fooled the gullible Brit media..don't get me wrong..they were great live (they oughta been as they had beeen around for years..) but they were about as pUnk as the Wombles..(mind you so were most of the UK wanna be megastars..)
Weirdly there's more interest now in the obscure bands (which category I guess RUDI fall into to folks outside this fine country)and there is gonna be a slew of RUDI bootleg vinyl out on Last years Youth from Germany (first 45 out a short while back sold 500 in a couple of weeks!) this is weird..I gave up on punk before RUDI folded as it had gotten tame and insipid and clichéd beyond belief..but I never lost the bug and still play in Belfast's greaser kings
The Sabrejets..and we had released more stuff on more labels in a few years than RUDI got to in all the time we were together..but I guess the old punk stuff is till with me..Therapy? just recorded Big Time for their next release (Andy cairns said that the best gig he was ever at was RUDI in the Ulster Hall..)and we headlined  a Joey Ramone tribute a few weeks back where we were the only band that was (a) over 25 and (b) played rockin' music..what's that guy doing with a cello?....it''s a double bass dummy!...amazingly it was a great gig and we tore the place apart..our last Cd sold out here in days..and has even been bootlegged on CDr locally!..I was just happy to get to play rockabilly versions of 'blitzkreig Bop' and 'wanna Be Your Boyfriend' ..to find out what we are like check out Munster records new Johnny Thunders 10" tribute Lp as we do 'Lil Bit Of Whore'..Thunders was my numero uno and I still collect EVERY thing related.....and hey..didn't mean to offend ya about SLF....(the stuff about their songs IS true tho!!..) take it easy greasy! Brian Young

And there we ended all happy and friends etc etc.
