"Worthless" ..Melody Maker
"Sick"...Daily Mirror
"Don't buy it"...Record Mirror

Their first single Pretty Paedophiles ep ( 1978 Parole records) with  songs like 'Raped' on it was definitely not hit material and Rough Trade which was the shop to get your single into had a problem with them It is said that the owner, Geoff Travis, on seeing this single in his shop smashed them into bits. A bit rich considering the content of some of the material his shop has stocked over the years and even more so that he named his shop after the slang for underage homosexual prostitutes but that's hypocrites for you  !! Its inflammatory title got them column inches in the The Daily Mirror who described them as sick. Purely named for shock value, nowhere on the single is  anything seedy advocated but the combination of 'raped' and 'paedophile' proved too much.

 Ripped & Torn Review

At the same time the press from Melody Maker to Sounds pilloried them including Gary Bushell who wrote "The sort of thing that gives punk bashing a good name "! Nice one Gary shame about some of the bands you have supported over the years.

This obviously didn't affect the band much because they named the next single Foreplay Playground / Cheap Night Out (1978 Parole) had the band and schoolgirls mingling on the picture cover and included an insert with press bad reviews !! Meanwhile in interviews with Ripped & Torn, Sean was proclaiming his penchant for  school girls.  Not aged 6-7 years but the mature ones aged 11 or 12 ! Yes well ! The single was a departure from the raw punkiness of the first and revealed a band who could play and construct good tunes. A sort of pop punk for teenyboppers but with a name like theirs they were never going to get into Jackie !!!

Having backed themselves into a corner they abruptly changed name and musical style  and glammed themselves. NME reports them changing their name to Wolfling but the name they decided on perhaps after all the hassle with Raped was Cuddly Toys. Originally to be managed by Marc Bolan before he died they used one of his unreleased songs as their first single...'Madman'. The change of image and music was a bit much for their hard core following who greeted them with a hail of cans  and gob till they played the old Raped toons !!.

Early songs like Escalator Hater or Normal are top quality punk with the requisite sneering vocals as good as anything . Cheap Night Out and Foreplay Playground " My babys got a hard on over me" are excellent. Check out the "Raped " Punk Collectors Series. Its well worth the money collecting the singles, demos and a live set from the Vortex as well.

A great band .
