Punk 2008... Issue 7 - March 2008

Fuck me this has been a bit of a struggle getting this update out as I have succumbed to a bout of writingphobia. However it's a big thanks to Ian Part Time who has come through in trumps and written the Ian Dury, Deaf School & Kilburns pieces so good on ya chummy. Highlight of the Wreckless Eric piece is an interview from  Richard Tupica at Turn It Down Blogspot.

The great thing about Punk Rock is it's width and depth. For those not in the know Punk has come to mean a stereotype sound and image. Back in 1977 however the boundaries were very much blurred and you had a wide remit of stuff to listen to. Often it was because there was nothing else. At other times it was because bands and labels shared a more challenging attitude.

This update has a look at some of those bands and labels that touched and were touched by punk.

Stiff Records

Oh yes indeedy where would we be without the mighty Stiff records roster and all their PR shenanigans and bands like The Damned, Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Wreckless Eric. We have a look at the label that launched a 1000 DIY copyists and reenergised the moribund record industry.

Chiswick Records

While we're looking at Stiff let's revisit the Chiswick pages. Another small label with a big heart and who contributed so much to the scene with bands like the Bishops, Radiators From Space, Johnny Moped, Skrewdriver and loads more!!

Wreckless Eric

That loveable rogue Wreckless Eric with his barbed songs, and drunken antics finally takes his place in Punk77!

This whole feature is based around the fantabulous interview from last year by. I've added to that a discography and archive reviews with Youtube videos, a brief history and thrown in an interview from fanzine Negative Reaction from 1978 to boot and its a goodie.

There's also no mention of those speccie bastards who covered 'Whole Wide World'...what was their bloody name now?

Ian Dury

I make no apologies Ian Dury was a 24 carat genius and New Boots & Panties is a stonker of an album. Music hall, cockernee, punk, funk - you name it! Ian & The Blockheads was one of a sort and it don't get much better than than this.

We've got a history, discography, interview, videos, piccies ...the frikken lot!!!

We've also got;

Deaf School

I know what a sexist bastard eh? The picture I choose is of the delectable Mrs Suggs (Bette Bright) after she had left the band but hey that's the perks!!

A seven piece band playing a mixture of rock, glam, cabaret seems mind boggling to me but Ian Part Time makes sense of it and tells you why they mattered

Dead Fingers Talk

The history of the band from its inception in wait for it...1969 right through to recording with Mick Ronson, picking up a hitchhiking Genesis P Orridge, hanging out with Soo Catwoman and being on the same record label as Benny Hill before the band finally blew up. Interviews, piccies, thrills & spills & more.
